As you’e seen, I’ve been showcasing examples from a fun little collaboration of dating horror stories from Shape magazine’s article, “Online Dating Disasters That’ll Make You Glad You’re Single”. I have two stories for you today, from Annabelle and Ashley.

So…Guess We’re Not “Friends”?
”I’d been dating a guy for three months when we got into a bad argument. We decided that we’d talk the next day, when we were both calmer. By the time I got home, I checked Facebook, where I saw he’d updated his status: ‘Well, guess I’m single again. Blergh.’ Seriously? I never thought we’d broken up—I just assumed we were in the middle of a fight!” -Annabelle, 26

The Language of Breakups is Universal
“I met a cute guy in Croatia while I was traveling, and we were having so much fun hanging out that I decided to cancel my hostel reservation for the rest of the week and stay at his place. Then, I checked his Facebook. The status updates were in Croatian, but I ran them through Google translate because I was curious what was on his mind. Big mistake: He had posted several statuses complaining about how annoying I was being!” -Ashley, 28

We are so used to reading about our Facebook “friends” and their private (yeah, right) lives that it’s shocking when we learn something about our own lives or relationships. You could look at examples like this in two different ways. One: “I can’t BELIEVE that THIS is how I find out how he (or she) REALLY feels!!!”, or Two: “Thank God I found out now, before I wasted any more time (even though finding out after a bunch of other random people sucks).” It’s up to you. Try to turn it into a positive. At least you know, right? That just saved you at LEAST a few weeks… right?? Or saved you some travel money? RIGHT?? I think sometimes that people forget that others can read their Facebook posts and status, and that it’s not their own private journal. Well shame on them then – use it to your advantage! Duh.

Lots of Love,

Emily
