Ah, the first date. It could be the beginning of something beautiful, right? Fireworks, sparks, maybe a smoldering fire… But before you venture out on this first date, let’s discuss my number one dating tip: Be careful of TMI. That’s “too much information”, for those of us who have to continually google acronyms.
Whether it’s your first date EVER, or your first date with your millionth person, TMI can kill – maybe murder horror-movie style – any chance you would have otherwise for a second date. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of not wasting our time. Especially after many unsuccessful dates, or after a break-up or divorce, or even as we age, it’s easy to think “I’ll just ‘be myself’, because I don’t have time to waste on people who don’t want the ‘real’ me.” BUT….. here’s the catch. Your date is probably in the same mindframe or position as you are! What if THEY verbally vomited on you on your first date and told you everything about themselves? All their annoying habits, all the reasons past relationships ended, views on sex and marriage and kids, all the disfunctional pieces of their life… would you want to stick around? Ditto for them.
Put your best foot forward. You want a second date? Suck it up and follow this dating tip. Once you have been on a few dates and you feel a connection, you can slowly (SLOWLY) start to divulge more information about yourself. There are things that you don’t EVER need to share – your toilet habits, how awesome your ex was at that “one (ahem) thing”… you get the picture, yes? Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel if they told you what you’re thinking about telling them? Less is more, at least in the beginning.Follow this dating tip, and let’s get you on that Date #2!!
Lots of Love,
Emily
